THE PROJECT //

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, killing 289,758 women in 2013 — that’s about 1 in every 4 female deaths. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease, where roughly half of Americans (47%) have at least one of these three risk factors. Sister to Sister is a non-profit organization dedicated to women’s heart health, and they wanted to develop a solution that would raise awareness among at-risk women and help them develop healthier lifestyles that promote heart health.

We worked with Sister to Sister to understand their target audience (i.e. women who are at risk for heart disease) as well as gain insight from the leading research on heart disease. Next, we created the strategy to develop a highly-educational and intuitive mobile experience that centered on women learning about their heart health risk in three easy steps:

  1. Download the Smart for the Heart mobile app and create an account
  2. Get your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar tested at a local CVS MinuteClinic
  3. Input your test results into the mobile app to view your risk score

To establish credibility, we utilized science-based criteria for establishing each woman’s risk based on the latest criteria from both the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. We also embedded gamification into the app were users can earn points for exercising, talking to their doctor about their heart health, eating well, and sharing their heart health journey with friends and family. Lastly, we created a marketing strategy that involved partnering with CVS MinuteClinic and Weight Watchers to better incentivize members to get regular checkups and to eat healthier.

Sister to Sister officially launched the Smart for the Heart mobile app at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Conference! Hosted at the Washington Convention Center, the ACC Conference focuses on sharing the latest developments in heart health and heart science. Thousands of cardiologists — and others in the medical and fitness communities

– travelled from around the world to champion healthy hearts. During the conference, Sister to Sister presented its heart risk assessment tool, Smart for the Heart, to conference attendees, and received a great response! Users loved the app’s simplicity, its vibrant colors, and the helpful recommendations it offered to aid them in their heart health journey. Utilizing science-based criteria for establishing each woman’s risk provided a lot of excitement amongst our early adopters, especially because it was based on the latest criteria from both the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association.

Attendees also loved that Smart for the Heart is a women-focused heart health app, and it was great to work with a notable leader in women’s heart health as they fulfill their mission of improving the lives and heart health of women around the country.
